As we look back over the history of First Christian Church of Newburgh, Indiana, God’s guiding hand shines through at every turn.
There have been humbler beginnings for churches, but our first worship service was held in the Newburgh Plaza Cinema Theater on May 20, 1979, led by Al Karges, the founding minister of this early congregation. An astonishing 127 people attended; of those, 21 folks committed to become members. We were fortunate enough—God-blessed enough—to be able to use a daycare facility next door to the theater to house Bible school programs.
Just a few months later, in July of 1979, we saw God working in our lives again as the church was able to purchase six acres of land across from Castle High School. The worship auditorium was completed and dedicated in September of 1982.
GROWTH
First Christian has experienced great growth over the years, and we’ve also experienced many transitions: moving from the Theater to our facility across from Castle High; adding the Family Life Center in 1995; transitioning from one worship service to two, from two to three, to a fourth service on Saturday evenings; and growing from one Sunday school hour to two, are just a few of the blessed changes this church has seen. Each transition was done for a purpose with God’s leading, and God blessed each transition.
NEW BEGINNINGS
Now, God has led us to our greatest transition thus far: the construction and completion of a new House in which we may learn, worship, minister, and grow ever closer to God. Located in Newburgh on State Road 261 south of Highway 66, God’s new House was dedicated and our first worship services were held July 2nd, 2006. Finishing touches will go on for a while longer. Like all of us, God’s House is a work in progress.
